Raiders to face Scottsbluff in boys district opener

The Red Raiders have been installed as the second seed in the upcoming District B-6 boys tournament it was announced Tuesday morning by the NSAA.

The Raiders (16-6) will open their tournament on Mon. Mar. 3, at 6:30 p.m. against No. 3 Scottsbluff (14-8). All games in the tournament will be played at Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff.

Should the Raiders get past the Bearcats, they would play for the championship on Mar. 4 at 6:30. The winner will earn an automatic bid to state.

Gering (18-5), which has earned the No. 1 seed, will play their first game on Monday, as well. The Bulldogs will meet the winner of the play-in game between No. 4 Alliance (7-13) and No. 5 McCook (10-14) on Saturday.

The Gering game will precede the Raiders at 5 p.m.

All season Sidney has battled with Scottsbluff and Gering for supremacy of the district. The trio finished the season in the top 10 on the NSAA points list. In fact they lined up one behind the other in 5th (Gering), 6th (Sidney) and 7th (Scottsbluff) places.

Gering received the top seed with an average point total of 43.4783. Sidney was at 43.0455 and Scottsbluff 42.7273.

The remainder of the field could not crack the 40-point line. Alliance (38.900) finished 23rd on the Class B list and McCook (38.7917) 27th.

The Raiders concluded the regular season with a 7-2 mark in the district. Against Gering they finished with a 1-1 record.

In their latest matchup the Bulldogs edged the Raiders with a buzzer beater to end a 71-69 contest on Feb. 7, in Gering. At the Cabelas Athletic Facility on Jan. 10, Sidney tamed the ‘Dogs 75-64.

Against Scottsbluff, Sidney was beaten big early in the season at the Western Conference Tournament. They then rebounded with two wins against the Bearcats on successive weekends earlier this month.

Scottsbluff is known an explosive shooting team that erupts to score points in bunches.

The Alliance Bulldogs failed to beat Sidney in three attempts.

Most recently, on the final day of the regular season, the Raiders turned back Alliance 76-65 after a slow start last Friday.

McCook fell to the Raiders 47-32 in their only meeting this season in the Bison’s home building back on Jan 11.
