Sidney Library celebrates Dr. Seuss' 111th birthday

Local children posed as the Cat in the Hat, Thing One and Thing Two and Horton Hears a Who to celebrate Dr. Seuss' 111th birthday on Monday afternoon.

The Sidney Public Library celebrated Dr. Seuss' (or, Theodor Seuss Geisel's) birthday by making familiar characters come to life for local children.

Dr. Seuss is one of the most well-known and cherished authors of all time. He wrote and illustrated 46 children's book throughout his career, that inspired films, television series, a Broadway musical and a theme park.

Every year millions of students participate as their schools host Seuss readings, which is the nation's largest reading observance.

This local event is a part of Read Across America Day, a nationwide reading celebration that takes place annually on March 2. Not only does Read Across America Day emphasize the power of knowledge that is to be gained by reading, but it also celebrates "the most beloved children's author in history." By participating in Dr. Seuss' birthday celebration the Sidney Public Library hoped to promote literacy with hands on projects, games and activities.

Children were able to dress up as characters seen in Dr. Seuss' books, make their own red- and white-striped hats and enjoy red fish, blue fish candy snacks.
