Nexgen Outfitters Social Media Manager Quinn Lund updates website posts in preparation for the official start of the website. Nexgen Outfitters offers hunting and camping supplies online.

An outdoor enthusiast, be it hunting, fishing, camping or just a well-prepared day-hiker, learns the importance of each piece of equipment working at its top level, doing what it is designed to, when it is needed. When a product doesn't do as needed, the situation could determine the success of the experience.

The lesson is if you want to get the right equipment the first time, talk with someone who uses it. That is part of the motivation behind a new company due to open in Sidney.

Nexgen Outfitters is a participant in the Western Nebraska Community College Innovation and Entrepreneurship program in Sidney. Trent Santero, co-founder of Nexgen Outfitters, is among a small group of local people starting an online company serving outdoors-minded people. The program carries a entrepreneur with a vision to the reality of being a business owner. Santero commends the program for the dedication the staff offers to new business owners.

"I appreciate the hard work Paula (Abbott) and her staff put into helping our business become a reality," Santero said.

He said the Nexgen founders are a combination of outdoor passion and business experience.

"We are hunters - the fun havers, yet really committed kind of hunters who make our wives cringe as the fall rolls around. We also just happen to have nearly a century of industry experience and feel very passionate about the value we can provide our customers," Santero said of the company's founders and few employees. They are currently at a staff of 11 employees.

Nexgen Outfitters is based on the knowledge and experience of the staff. They literally have the field experience to know what tool is best for the job and what is the best way to design that tool.

Their motivation to start a new company came about partly by the natural gravitation of consumers toward online purchasing. He said the market shift, compounded with their knowledge of what works in the field, and a few informal garage meetings, lead to stepping out into their future. The founders and staff of Nexgen Outfitters are a combination of different backgrounds, including WNCC graduates.

"It's really kind of a neat mix of people," he said. "I'm always amazed how something as simple as a story from deer camp can motivate and align a group of complete strangers. It's really just a giant part of who we are."

The company is web-based with customers viewing products and making purchases online. However, Santero stressed that their goal isn't to be just another place to make your gear purchase.

"We want you to know what we know, whether you call us for some help with a product, you've got the latest weather forecast from our blog or even just some in-season tips and tricks through our social channels. That is what we're really good at and we want to share," he said.

Santero stresses that when a customer calls Nexgen Outfitters, the customer will talk with a person who knows the product, what it will do and how to guide the customer in what he or she needs. It is a combination of experience in the field and understanding how to help customers.

He said the focus of the business falls under three categories: hunt, shoot and camp. They grew up with a passion for hunting, camping and all things outside. It is a passion they are applying to business.

"We're a bunch of dudes who like to hunt, but we know what we're doing," he said.
