The Potter-Dix Children's Theater will perform its annual musical this week.
The production – held for the eighth consecutive year – serves as a fundraiser for the Potter-Dix Early Learning Facility. The facility includes a day care and a preschool.
There are 24 children, ranging in age from 4 to 13, who will be involved in the production of "The Gold Miner's Daughter" this Friday at 7 p.m. at the Potter American Legion Hall.
A silent auction and barbecue will be held prior to the performance from 5:30-6:45 p.m.
Practice for the students began July 6 and have lasted two hours every weekday for two weeks, according to director Kristin Kasten. She is assisted by Beth Bogert, while Jodi Enevoldsen is the costume designer and Pastor Betsy Galloway-Carew is the accompanist.
"With less than 20 hours of practice, they learn lyrics and actions to nine songs, as well as memorize lines and stage movements," Kasten said. "You have to see it to believe it! And they do this for fun during their summer vacation."
"The Gold Miner's Daughter" is a melodramatic musical tale which includes traditional country music, such as "King of the Road," "Oh, Lonesome Me" and "Rocky Top." The play contains a villain everyone will love to hate – Mr. Bigglebottom, the cruel banker who threatens to take Gracie Pearl as his wife if her father doesn't find any gold in their family mine.
"It is a classic melodrama with audience participation encouraged – boos, hisses, hoorays and oh, dears," Kasten added.
