On Tuesday, August 8th, a special Sidney City Council session was held at the Sidney High School auditorium. The reason for the change of venue was the robust public interest over the sale of the building and property of 812 13th Avenue, known through the city as "Big Red", to Worldwide Trophy Adventures (WTA). SIDNEY - Shortly after 2:30 p.m., on Sunday, August 13, the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) was alerted to a motor vehicle accident with injury, approximately three miles north of Sidney, on Road 111. We interviewed three of the key players involved in the WTA/812 13th Avenue sale and purchase transaction to clarify some of the issues involved and to give citizens a clearer understanding of the deal as proposed. Basically, as UST Global terminated their lease in February of 2023, WTA quickly contacted the City of Sidney and proposed a "swap" of properties; the 1200 Pole Creek building and property for the 812 13th Avenue property, along with cash and other considerations. SIDNEY - Wireless World on Glover Road in Sidney had another successful event with their free backpack giveaway. This was their biggest year yet as in addition to giving away the backpacks filled with school supplies to local students, they also served a hot and delicious breakfast of biscuits and gravy to the attendees. Wayne Leroy Roberts, born February 27, 1936, entered into rest on August 9, 2023. Wayne was the son of William and Martha (Crowley) Roberts and grew up in Dalton, Nebraska. After losing his father at a young age, his uncle and aunt Laurence and Mary Miller became his legal guardians. Wayne attended Dalton High School, where he excelled in athletics. Saturday afternoon featured absolutely perfect weather for the annual Guns & Hoses Charity Softball game over at the softball fields next to Legion Park. A big crowd came out to root on their favorite team, and the players and families had a great time with the event. Friday, August 11 was a gorgeous evening, giving Sidney's annual Night of Hope Walk for Cancer absolutely perfect summer weather for the event, and a big crowd turned out for the festivities. Night of Hope raises awareness and money for those fighting cancer and cancer survivors. This year's event raised nearly $50,000. 17 teams made the walk this year, with Team Fox being the top team. The Cheyenne County Community Center's Co-Ed Softball League is winding down, and August 14th's slate of games helped determine August 15th's matchups for the championship game.
