This is a seven hole golf course, where each team goes around twice, making it 14 holes, with par being 52. Nineteen teams in all participated this year, and resulted in having three flights. It's been a fun season for the Cheyenne County Community Center Softball League, if somewhat marred by multiple cancellations and rescheduled games due to the area's fickle weather patterns. On Thursday, August 3, the teams were able to get some playing time in before the summer storms rolled in and stopped play. Leyton's Lady Warrior Volleyball team had an unexpected trip Monday, coming down from Dalton to practice at the Cheyenne County Community Center. The gym floor at Leyton High School was refinished and not quite ready for use, so Leyton Volleyball Head Coach Natasha Haupt had her girls come down to Sidney for their scheduled morning practice. Perfect weather Sunday morning was on tap for the SSP Outlaw Pistol Match at the Sidney Shooting Park. 31 competitors took their places at the range for a day of sharp shooting friendly competition. It was a fine way to open this year's Cheyenne County Fair on Saturday, with the Sidney Cheer and Dance teams taking first place at the Rowdy's Round Up Cheer & Dance Competition. The Cheer competition featured the squads from Sidney, Gering and Creek Valley giving it their all Saturday afternoon and delighting the big crowd that came out the cheer on the Cheer Squads. For the last four years, the Panhandle area sports scene has been dominated by the best athlete in the region, Luke Kasten of Potter. The Potter-Dix 2023 graduate burst on to the scene four years ago as a freshman, leading the Potter-Dix Coyote 6-Man football team to a resurgence that in following years saw undefeated seasons and chances to play for State Championships. Sidney's American Legion Post 17 Junior Baseball team traveled up to Gering over the weekend for the Area District Tournament, and lost their elimination game to Alliance on Sunday in a heartbreaker, 9-to-8. The Juniors started the tournament with a match up against Chadron, and jumped out to a 2-to-0 lead when Rhyder Bayne smacked a two-out double to bring two runs home. Although Saturday morning started out cool and overcast, the heat was on at the Sidney Aquatic Center as the Sidney Stingray Swim Team hosted their annual meet that brought together the finest young swimmers in the Panhandle area and beyond. Teams from Alliance, Bridgeport, Hemingford, Torrington and a group of unaffiliated swimmers competed for the best times, and both the Sidney boy's and girl's teams held dominance during the competition. There was plenty of action over the past week as the Sidney area was spared from the rain and thunderstorms that have descended upon the area over the last few weeks, and most of the Softball and Community Center youth baseball teams were able to get their games in. The Sidney American Legion Post 17 junior team traveled to Gordon Wednesday to face off against he Security First Regulator juniors, and Sidney starting pitcher Connor Hurt twirled a gem, shutting the Gordon team out, striking out five while scattering two hits and three walks over four full innings. On Wednesday June 28, the Sidney American Legion Post 17 Senior Baseball team traveled up to Gordon for a game against the Security First Regulators. What started as a pitcher's duel turned into fast and furious finish as the home team was able to rally past the Post 17 Senior in the bottom of the 7th inning for the win. It's a known fact in the Panhandle that Sidney always has a strong Lady Raider Girls Volleyball program, and during the summer, you can see why. Sidney and Cheyenne County girls get exposed to volleyball at a young age through the Cheyenne County Community Center and in elementary school, and then the pace picks up in middle school. Besides the numerous camps around the area girls can attend, the Sidney Middle School girls also have an opportunity to hone and improve their volleyball skills... Full story

WALK OFF: Sidney's Reid Ficus comes through again for the Sidney Post 17 Junior team, clearing the bases with a triple and invoking the mercy rule to end the game against Ogallala on June 14. On Saturday, June 17, the Potter-Dix Early Learning Facility held their annual Summer Shenanigans Golf Fundraiser at Prairie Pines Golf Course in Potter. 10 teams participated in the event, which raises money for the Early Learning Facility. This year, funds raised will be used to service the toys and playground equipment and also to resurface the area to keep it safe and in good shape. The second annual MAC vs. MNAC Basketball All-Star games were held at Sutherland High School Saturday afternoon. Graduated seniors from area MAC conference schools participated in the games. The girls game was played first, and was won by the MNAC team. The boys played the second game, with the MAC team coming out on top. After a rainy week that cancelled many games, the Post 17 Juniors and Seniors returned to Legion Park on Wednesday, June 7, for a pair of games against the Alliance Spartans. The annual East/West Football and Volleyball games were held in Scottsbluff over the weekend, and the East teams continued their dominance, winning both the Football and Volleyball games. The football game needed to be moved up twice, first to 5 p.m. from its original kick-off time then to 11 a.m as late afternoon/early evening thunderstorms were forecast for the area. SIDNEY – Cabela's is doing more than 'drownin' worms and killin' time' this summer. In honor of Bass Pro Shops Founder Johnny Morris and the 'Gone Fishing' movement, Sidney Cabela's restocked a local child center with fishing poles, tackle and other items to further encourage local youth to get out and go fishing. The second annual Lynden Annora Memorial Golf Tournament was held at Prairie Ridge Golf Course Saturday morning, and picture-perfect weather greeted the golfers and stayed throughout the course of the event.
